The Spirit of Poland exhibition in Brasília is officially opened

The Spirit of Poland exhibition in Brasília is officially opened. As a result of collaboration with culture.pl, in 2014 The Spirit of Poland exhibited at the DW! São Paulo Design Weekend in August. Now Polish design is on showcase at the the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República in Brasília.

On 4th of November, at the official opening, over 200 guests were welcomed by the Ambassador of Poland to Brazil Andrzej Maria Braiter and The Spirit of Poland initiative was presented by the organisers. The actual project of the exhibition, as well as the objects presented there, received lots of recognition from the diplomats, press and the people associated with the design scene and design education in Brazil. The exhibition aims at showcasing Polish material culture, its history and contemporary development through a presentation of the diversity of Polish companies. We are very happy to have this possibility of presenting design from Poland to such a great audience. It was a real honour and a privilege for us to welcome representatives of international diplomacy Israeli Ambassador, Singapore’s representatives, Delegation of the European Union to Brazil, and the Dean of the University of Brasilia.

As part of the exhibition, which takes place in Galeria Terreo of the Museu Nacional, we  organised a series of talks and workshops for the unique museum’s audience: cultural organisations, local design and artistic community, students as well as other museum-goers.

On 5th of November we presented an overview of what is happening in Polish design with a film projection “Poużywajmy sobie (Let’s use it.) The history of Polish design” thanks to support of our partner DOMO+. Monika Brauntsch from Kafti presented an overview of lighting design in Poland. Next day was a practical day with a workshop led by Dorota Kabała on designing for sports. During the workshop the group focused on products of two sports companies presented at The Spirit of Poland exhibition – Shima and Nobile. Shima produces motorcycle gloves using advanced materials. Nobile works on safety systems for kitesurfing using their own patents. The group disassembled the Shima gloves to find out how they are constructed. They also experimented with the Nobile products in terms of safety.

During the first week of the exhibition we had a great opportunity to run a design management workshop at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB) led by Monika Brauntsch, Weronika Rochacka-Gagliardi and our guest, Renata Mikołajczyk from recreativa. We had a room full of product, graphics and service designers, as well as engineers. The participants worked on business models using Alex Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas as a tool. We focused on the UnB-based workshop Muira Design, which designs and produces beautiful, wooden furniture using exotic Brazilian wood, such as jatobá or ipê.

The energy during these days was unique and we would like to thank the amazing team at UnB, especially Marisa Maas, Raquel Chaves, Roberta Brack and Ana Claudia Maynardes, as well as all our lovely guests and participants!

The event is taking place with the support of the Polish Embassy and Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República in Brasília.
