    With the development of 3D printing, there are attempts to create a hand prosthesis based on this technology. The key to the solutions being developed is to adapt to the needs of users through parameterization and personalization.

    The combination of 3D printing, electronics, open source solutions, creative coding and algorithmic design, based on User Centered Design methods, is clearing a path for new solutions. They allow you to provide for individual needs, such as those related to daily tasks, sports or hobbies; which can become part of, or most of the entire expression.

    The project myhand aims at developing a system of printed 3D parametric prostheses which combine the some of the features of whats available in the market today with the very unusual needs of their users, with the additional goal of being affordable.

    Peconheiros – the project in the Amazon

    Brazilian açaí berries took the market by storm. Usually served in the form of ice cream, juices or smoothies, they are valued not only for their taste, but also for their nutritional value. Yet, consumers still know little about the fruit itself, growing high up on palm trees and about the result of the global demand for açaí.

    Pecohneiros, the açaí pickers, work in treacherous conditions when collecting the berries, which result in many accidents. The aim of the project run in the Amazon was to improve the comfort and safety of climbing.

    The concepts and prototypes presented in the exhibition were created within the first stage of the project. It was respecting the traditional way of acquiring açaí, which is an important cultural skill, and is now also a significant source of income for nearly 500,000 inhabitants of the Amazon. It also protects Amazonian forest ecosystems which, due to the growing demand for açaí, are often replaced by monocultures.

    Uma avalanche de açaí brasileiro conquista novos mercados. Oferecido geralmente na forma de sorvetes, polpas e sucos que são apreciados, não só pelo seu sabor, mas acima de tudo, por suas propriedades nutricionais. No entanto, os consumidores ainda sabem muito pouco sobre a fruta em si, como ela é obtida e os efeitos da crescente demanda internacional pelo açaí.

    Peconheiros é como são chamadas às pessoas que trabalham na colheita, em condições de pouca ou nenhuma segurança, sempre na copa das palmeiras e que frequentemente, envolvem-se em acidentes. O objetivo do projeto realizado na Amazônia foi o de aumentar o conforto e a segurança durante o trabalho, em suas escaladas e descidas.

    Os conceitos e protótipos apresentados na exposição foram desenvolvidos na primeira etapa do projeto. Sobretudo, com respeito a maneira tradicional de coleta do açaí, que representa uma tradição cultural importante e atualmente, também uma significativa fonte de renda para quase 500 mil habitantes da Amazônia. O projeto também protege os ecossistemas florestais amazônicos que devido à crescente demanda por açaí, são muitas vezes transformados em monoculturas.

Podawane zwykle w postaci lodów, soków czy smoothies, cenione są nie tylko ze względu na swój smak, ale przede wszystkim właściwości odżywcze. Konsumenci ciągle jednak bardzo mało wiedzą o samym owocu, o tym jak jest pozyskiwany, oraz o skutkach globalnego zapotrzebowania na açaí.

    Pecohneiros, osoby pracujące przy zbiorze rosnących wysoko na palmach jagód, często ulegają wypadkom. Celem zrealizowanego w Amazonii projektu było zwiększenie komfortu oraz bezpieczeństwa ich wspinaczki.

    Zaprezentowane na wystawie koncepcje i prototypy zostały stworzone w ramach pierwszego etapu projektu. Odbywał się on w poszanowaniu dla tradycyjnego sposobu pozyskiwania açaí, który jest ważną umiejętnością kulturową, a obecnie także znaczącym źródłem dochodu dla blisko 500.000 mieszkańców Amazonii. Chroni on również ekosystemy lasów amazońskich, które z powodu zwiększającego się popytu na açaí często zastępowane są przez uprawy monokulturowe.

    The exhibition is a perverse commentary on the phenomenon of „national” design – in this case, Polish and Brazilian. The curators decided to select some of the most distinctive objects, which had been recently regularly shown in exhibitions of design. The key choices were not a subjective assessment by the curators, but made with indisputable data: the sheer number of exhibitions in which individual authors had their objects shown.

    Seeking patterns that have appeared in recent years, the curators of the design exhibitions, Ewa Solarz, Magda Kochanowska and Gabriel Patrocinio identified five types of objects that were most often exhibited. These included furniture, glass, ceramics, traditional folk motifs and innovation. Each of the five categories is important to both Polish and Brazilian design.

    The selected objects were to be a central part of the presentation. Nevertheless, they were merely the starting point for the creation of the exhibition. It was a unique set of posters from the 1960s and 70s, which at the time had the task of promoting Poland as a tourist destination, that changed the focus of the exhibition. These „Polish tourist posters”, described more in-depth (in the catalog) by Izabela Iwanicka from the Poster Museum in Wilanow, provoked the curators to reflect on how Poland – and Brazil – now create their images.

    The presentation of “Dialogo Design: Polônia Brasil” reveals a set of 20 posters. Some of them belong to the world-famous Polish School of Posters and, among the authors, include Waldemar Świerzy and Henryk Tomaszewski. All historical works come from the collection of the Poster Museum in Wilanow.

    Especially for the occasion of the exhibition organized in Brazil, new graphic designs were created – posters by five Polish and five Brazilian graphic designers. Their theme is once again promotion – Poland and Brazil.

    Graphic designs – the historical and the contemporary – together with selected works – form a strong set which is the heart of the story in the design of these two distant countries. The exhibition is open to different interpretations and does not provide ready-made answers.

    Complementing the exhibition was a multimedia presentation, showing a wider range of Polish and Brazilian projects in the aforementioned five categories of products.

    Specialist sports footwear and snowshoes; a variety of boards for, e.g. kitesurfing and windsurfing; kayaks and other boats; bikes, helmets and pads. These are just a few examples of the many objects that allow people to undertake an activity in atypical conditions, reach areas that are difficult to access, enjoy new experiences and break new records.

    We improve our bodies, equipping them with various tools which evolution has failed to provide. Despite their technological advancement, they are far from perfect. Convenient in certain situations,they are bothersome in all the others. When they are not in use, for example during transport, most sports equipment cannot be packed with the easiness of insects’ wings that roll under their shell. Transport and storage of the ‘additional organs’ present difficulties. The equipment often weighs too much or its size is inconvenient, which proves particularly bothersome in the case of dynamic and nomadic lifestyles.

    Manufacturers of sports equipment aspire to find solutions for transport and storage problems. The In Motion exhibition presents examples of these solutions. It is worth paying attention to the features of each object and the benefits to their potential users, as well as to the fact that the products share many characteristics, such as core design assumptions, operating rules and the way of working with materials.

    The products presented at the In Motion exhibition are characterized by a bold approach to finding solutions to these problems. The objects have been selected from numerous other concepts so they could clearly present a certain design trend. The majority of the products have gone into production in the last few years. All of them are dedicated to individual users. The exhibited objects can make one reflect on the path that the manufacturers and users of sports equipment will choose. Will everyone in the near future have a backpack filled with ultralight, excellently designed, foldable products that enable one to cope in all possible conditions? Or will we give up the desire to own items in favour of the idea of sharing? Perhaps both tendencies will start to overlap. It is also possible that the desire to accomplish perfection in imitating nature will lead to incorporating sports equipment into the human body. This would give people complete freedom and flexibility. Maybe in the future equipment will be an additional human hand or leg, a wing or fin.

    Specjalistyczne buty sportowe i rakiety śnieżne. Różnorodne deski, np. do kitesurfingu, windsurfingu. Kajaki i wszelkie inne jednostki pływające. Rowery, kaski i ochraniacze… To tylko niektóre spośród przedmiotów umożliwiających nam funkcjonowanie w nietypowych warunkach, zdobywanie trudno dostępnych terenów, doznawanie nowych wrażeń, pobijanie rekordów.

    Usprawniamy swoje ciało, wzbogacając je o różnego typu elementy, w które nie wyposażyła nas natura. One jednak, mimo zaawansowania technologicznego, pozostają dalekie od doskonałości. Stanowią ułatwienie wyłącznie w określonej sytuacji, a w każdej innej zaczynają przeszkadzać.

    W sytuacji, gdy sprzęt sportowy nie jest używany, na przykład w czasie transportu, człowiek nie może go schować z łatwością, z jaką owady zwijają swoje skrzydła pod pancerz. Chcąc przetransportować czy przechować swoje „dodatkowe organy”, napotykamy trudności. Często sprzęt waży za dużo lub ma mało poręczne gabaryty, co okazuje się szczególnie uciążliwe przy dynamicznym i nomadycznym trybie życia.

    Producenci sprzętu sportowego wyraźnie dążą do tego, by był on łatwy w transporcie i przechowywaniu. Przykłady takich rozwiązań prezentuje wystawa „In motion”. Zapoznając się z nimi, warto zwrócić uwagę na cechy poszczególnych przedmiotów, na korzyści, jakie dzięki nim osiąga użytkownik. A także na to, że wybrane produkty łączy wiele wspólnych cech. W tym główne założenia projektowe, zasady działania oraz sposób pracy z materiałami.

    Prezentowane na wystawie „In motion” produkty cechuje odważne podejście w poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi na współczesne potrzeby. Są to przykładowe rozwiązania, które prezentują zaobserwowany kierunek projektowania. Większość z nich została wprowadzona do produkcji w ciągu ostatnich kilku lat. Wszystkie dedykowane są indywidualnemu użytkownikowi. Podczasich analizowania nasuwa się refleksja, jaką drogę obiorą producenci oraz użytkownicy sprzętu sportowego. Czy w niedalekiej przyszłości każdy aktywny człowiek będzie posiadał plecak pełen ultralekkich, świetnie zaprojektowanych, rozkładanych produktów umożliwiających korzystanie z wszelkich możliwych warunków? Czy jednak odejdziemy od chęci posiadania produktów na własność i zbliżymy się raczej do idei współużytkowania? Być może oba te kierunki zaczną się wyraźnie przenikać. Możliwe też, że chęć osiągnięcia doskonałości bliskiej naturze będzie prowadzić do tego, aby sprzęt sportowy, dziś mający nadal postać „doczepianych” do ludzkich ciał „dodatkowych organów”, został na stałe w nie wmontowany. Dzięki temu odzyskalibyśmy pełną wolność i swobodę. Stałyby się one kolejną ludzką ręką, nogą, skrzydłem, płetwą.

    Design Dialogue’s curatorial team, consisting of two Polish curators Magda Kochanowska and Ewa Solarz, and Brazilian curator, Gabriel Patrocinio, have created a space for dialogue, which will bring Polish and Brazilian designers together. The exhibition will also juxtapose Polish and Brazilian, graphic design and product design, as well as the classic and the contemporary.

    The part of the exhibition focused on graphic design will feature masterpieces from the Polish Poster School alongside works by contemporary Polish and Brazilian graphic designers. Posters on loan from the Poster Museum at Wilanów are vintage posters promoting tourism to Poland. They will be displayed in tandem with works by contemporary graphic designers promoting both Poland and Brazil. The clever riffs on the old style promotional posters will be created by Polish graphic designers including Robert Czajka, Małgorzata GurowskaMarta IgnerskaDawid Ryski and Jakub Jezierski , and their Brazilian counterparts Bruno Porto, Fabio Lopez, Rico Lins, Grande Circular, and Estudio Mola.

     

    Design Dialogue will also feature the best of Polish and Brazilian product design – distinctive pieces from each country. The narrative of the exhibition will be built around five main categories and will present a Polish design and Brazilian design in each, respectively: Vzór / Furf Design (furniture); Agnieszka Bar / Jader Almeida (glass); Alicja Patanowska / Holaria (ceramics); Kosmos Project / Sergio Matos (tradition); and Zieta Prozessdesign / Domingos Tótora (innovation). The exhibition will be complemented by multimedia presentations, which will add a broader context and showing designs by other artists in the same categories.

    Accidental meetings, such as the one which sparked the organisation of this exhibition, allow the designers from such distant countries as Poland and Brazil to discover common experiences, aspirations and initiatives – explains Brazilian curator, Gabriel Patrocinio. Different stories or contexts from the two countries allow the two groups to look together into a metaphorical ‘mirror’ and see similarities on the other side. In this case, graphic design and the five groups of objects create a kind of axis around which the Polish-Brazilian dialogue on design is centred.

    This year, the exhibition will be on displayed at two leading Brazilian museums: the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, MAM, June 4st – July 3rd, 2016) and the National Museum in Brasilia (Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República, November 1st – 27th 2016).

    Polish design in Rio de Janeiro

    Between the 30th March and 16th May, Culture.pl, in collaboration with The Spirit of Poland, will present the next edition of Polish design exhibition in Centro Carioca de Design in Rio de Janeiro.

    After two exhibitions at the DW! São Paulo Design Weekend and exposition at the Museu Nacional in Brasilia, it’s time for Rio. The venue is the modern Centro Carioca de Design. It will be the fourth edition of The Spirit of Poland in Brazil.

    The opening of the exhibition coincides with the 5th anniversary of Centro Carioca de Design. For the organisers it is a great distinction that the Brazilian centre wants to celebrate its anniversary with an exhibition of Polish design. „We really wanted that the exhibition opens exactly on the same day as we opened our doors to the public 5 years ago. Polish design is not very well known here, it’s a fresh topic and thanks to it interesting. I am sure that the exhibition will find a great interest amongst our visitors” – said Paula de Oliveira Camargo, Director of the Centro Carioca de Design.

    2015 is also a special year in the history of the city, which celebrates its 450th birthday in March (it was founded exactly on the March the 1st 1565). „The fact that we can be in Rio in this extraordinary time, is a great honour for Polish design. Rio is a place of a really vibrant cultural life, it’s also home for the oldest design schools in Brazil” – says Weronika Rochacka-Gagliardi, one of the organisers.

    Alongside the exhibition, the organisers plan a series of talks, panel discussions and practical workshops, aimed at local design and artistic community, students from local schools, universities, as well a general public and tourists.

  • imm cologne 2015

    Culture.pl, in collaboration with the Polish Institute Düsseldorf, will present the next edition of The Spirit of Poland, starting on the 19th January as part of the international interiors fair, imm cologne. Six brands will represent Polish design at one of the most important industry events in Europe.

    Promotion of Polish design at exhibitions and fairs abroad is one of the most important aims of The Spirit of Poland initiative. Thanks to the collaboration of Culture.pl and the Polish Institute in Düsseldorf, Polish brands will have, one more time, a chance to present their potential to international audience. After a success in Brazil (where the initiative participated in DW! São Paulo Design Weekend, as well as organised an exhibition at the National Museum in Brasilia), The Spirit of Poland is back in Europe. This time, at the imm cologne fair, as part of the Pure Talents zone, the following companies will be on show: Vzór, Tabanda, Ćmielów Design Studio, Kafti, Kosmos and Malafor.

    Polish design, promoted by The Spirit of Poland, is mostly about strong brands and well designed products. It is design with high aesthetic and utility values, which becomes a symbol of Polish material culture, its history and contemporary development. Pure Talents, as part of the imm cologne, is a space where new concepts of furniture, lighting and accessories will be presented by international designers. “Products chosen for this exposition, show how Polish designers work with material creatively, how they deal with logistical issues, how they draw from local traditions and resources of the Polish market. These are, first of all, market products, with a strong commercial potential” – says Monika Brauntsch, one of the organisers.

    The imm cologne will open the fair season of 2015. It is one of the most important trade events for interior design in the world, where companies showcase their newest collections, products and concepts. The presence of Polish brands, at such a prestigious event, is a chance for showcasing Polish design in the international forum.

  • Brasilia 2014

    POLISH DESIGN IN THE CITY OF MODERNISM

    Culture.pl presents the second edition of The Spirit of Poland at the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República
    It is the second of this year’s exhibitions from The Spirit of Poland, which took place in Brasilia between 4 and 28 November. This time Polish design was showcased at the spectacular venue of the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and considered as one of the most important icons of modernist architecture in the world.

    As a result of collaboration with Culture.pl, in 2014 The Spirit of Poland exhibited at the DW! São Paulo Design Weekend in August as part of MADE led by Waldick Jatobá. The exhibition proved to be a great success. In November the Polish design was showcase at the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República in Brasilia. The aim of The Spirit of Poland exhibition is to showcase products, in which development designers play an important role. The context for products chosen for the exhibition was the history of individual brands, presented in an attractive way, encouraging the viewer to learn more about the objects themselves as well as the process of their development. The initiative aims at showcasing Polish material culture, its history and contemporary development through a presentation of the diversity of Polish companies.

    As part of the exhibition, which took place in Galeria Terreo of the Museu Nacional, the organisers planned a series of talks and workshops for the unique museum’s audience: the world of international diplomacy, cultural organisations, local design and artistic community, students as well as other museum-goers.

    “It’s a great honour for The Spirit of Poland to be able to showcase our exhibition in such a spectacular venue. Thanks to the collaboration with the Polish Embassy in Brasilia and the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República, Polish design will be shown at the iconic building of Brazilian modernism, so adored by the worldwide audience. For us it’s a great chance for strenghtening the position of Polish design internationally as well as in our home country” – said Dorota Kabała, curator and exhibition designer.
