• São Paulo 2014

The sixth edition of The Spirit of Poland exhibition started on the 14th August as part of DW! São Paulo Design Weekend, presenting over a dozen of Polish design brands in Brazil. The products shown at the exhibition showed the Brazilian audience Polish material culture, its history and nowadays development.

This year we were delighted to be working together with MADE, which is the Brazilian design promotion forum, led by Waldick Jatobá. The aim of the exhibition was to showcase Polish contemporary material culture through a presentation of the diversity of Polish companies, in which development designers play an important role. In 2014 edition the context for products chosen for the exhibition was the history of individual brands, presented in an attractive way, encouraging the viewer to learn more about the objects themselves as well as the process of their development. An additional element, emphasising the exhibition’s concept was especially designed scent identification developed by Marta Siembab/Senselier & Maciej Kawecki/Brandburg.

The brands taking part in the exhibition in São Paulo: Agnieszka Bar, CUSTOM (CSTM), Designlab, Kafti, Kosmos Project, MALAFOR, MOA, Nobile, Pani Jurek, PET PETITS, SHIMA, Studio Robot, Tabanda, TAKK, WellDone®, V4, Vzór, Zieta Prozessdesign. To find out more, see DESIGNERS section.

  • Lodz&Cieszyn 2013

Both exhibitions in Lodz (October 2013) and Cieszyn (February 2014) were developed as a sort of “recollection” from the exhibition in São Paulo at the DW! São Paulo Design Weekend in August 2013. It showed how the Polish products were seen by the Brazilian audience through incorporating quotes from Brazilian designers, architects, gallery owners and cultural promoters into the exhibition itself.

The key to selecting the objects in 2013 edition of The Spirit of Poland was the spirit and soul of material.

The exhibition presented the relationship between the designer and the materials through a series of objects and materials that were the starting point for their creation. It included handmade products, such as jewellery created out of coal (broKat) – the result of a co-operation between young Polish architects with manufacturers, based on their knowledge and experience. On the other hand, it presents objects that were designed with the use of digital technologies, such as a laser plotter or miller. These examples include products made from sheets of steel or plastic. Their form reflects the designers’ fascination with the material and direct relationship between the initial idea, a human hand and the material itself.

  • Warsaw 2010

The National Opera House is a very prestigious venue in the city centre of Warsaw. We had a great privilege to exhibit there after returning from Tokyo. But we didn’t want to duplicate the exhibition shown in Japan. The challenge was to develop a dialogue between the elegant interiors of the National Opera House and contemporary shapes of objects presented by The Spirit of Poland.

The brands shown at this exhibition were:

  • Tokyo 2010

This was the first in the series of The Spirit of Poland exhibitions.

The aim of the exhibition was to promote young, Polish brands from the sector of industrial design. The exhibition was part of Tokyo Designers Week 2010, the annual design event in Japan and one of the most prestigious in the world. Coordinators of the exhibition, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tokyo and the Silesian Castle of Art and Enterprise in Cieszyn, through the presentation of Polish design, wished to promote the innovation and the initiative of the Polish companies. The design studios presented during the exhibition also participated in the EU Gateway Programme, an interior design business mission held by the European Commission. The event took place in days preceding Tokyo Designers Week.

The brands presented in Tokyo in 2010 were:

The exhibition also featured the newest Polish multimedia art – the interactive Polish film Sufferrosa, directed by Dawid Marcinkowski.

The event was supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
