The Spirit of Poland presented Polish brands @ São Paulo Design Weekend

DW! Design weekend is officially finished. Almost 150 events: exhibitions, workshops, meetings and lectures took place during 4 amazing days in São Paulo. The sixth edition of The Spirit of Poland exhibition started on the 14th August, presenting over a dozen of Polish design brands in Brazil. The venue, Cidade Jardim, with the stunning view of the metropolis, turned out to be a great place and attracted top designers, curators, producers, distributors, business people and retailers from all over Brazil! Brazilian audience didn’t let us down again – thank you all for coming!

As a result of collaboration with MADE, which is the Brazilian design promotion forum, The Spirit of Poland presented products from 18 Polish brands. The aim of the exhibition was showcasing Polish material culture, its history and contemporary development through a presentation of the diversity of Polish companies, in which development designers play an important role. In this year’s edition the context for products chosen for the exhibition was the history of individual brands, presented in an attractive way, encouraging the viewer to learn more about the objects themselves as well as the process of their development.

The actual project of the exhibition, as well as the objects presented there, received lots of recognition. We are very grateful to Waldick Jatoba, the main organiser and curator of MADE, for presenting design from Poland to such prestigious audience! The exhibition was appreciated by Marko Brajovic, the recognised Brazilian designers, responsible for MADE project, who said that it has very evident and clear character.

Friday – after our special opening – the main Brazilian daily, Folha De S.Paulo, not only published an article on The Spirit of Poland, but also recommended our presentation at their cultural guide! In the afternoon – as part of MADE program – Marko Brajovic (one of the top Brazilian designers working with such brands NIKE, Camper, Google) gave a great lecture on Design by Nature. Excellent talks also gave the guests from Holland: Design Thinking with Richard Van Der Laken – CEO/Creative Director of Dutch Design event and “What Design Can Do?” with Jorn Konijn – Curator of design and architecture and Dutch representant of 2015 Bienal of Design 2015 in Florianópolis.

The third day of The Spirit of Poland @ MADE – we had a feeling that the exhibition is certainly a point on the map of DW! visitors. Thanks to several articles about our exhibition in brazilian media and design blogs the crowds visiting Cidade Jardim on Saturday didn’t miss the 3rd floor! A day started with a nice incident – Ruy Ohtake, one of the leading Brazilian architects, the author of such a masterpiece as the ‘half-moon’ shaped Hotel Unique in Sao Paulo, came specially to see the exhibition. Fascinated by Polish School of Posters Mr Ohtake came to explore the fresh design from Poland. For us, it certainly has been an Honour!

The second part of the day was dedicated to lectures – Italian Contemporary Design with Giorgio Bonaguro, Analogia Project Atelier and Marco Guazzini. Very interesting points, certainly worth further discussion! The Polish presentations has started – with Weronika’s Rochacka introduction on Culture.pl and The Spirit of Poland and the thorough overview of the historical, social and economical context of Polish design scene. Considering the number of questions that followed, Polish design is certainly interesting and ‘exotic’ to the Brazilian audience. Dorota Kabała took care of the curated introduction of the exhibition, describing the idea of the project and its content. She also told a little bit more about Polish sport brands and designing for them, as that’s what she specialises in.

The Spirit of Poland exhibition in Sao Paulo is over. It’s been amazing DW! Design Weekend for us. We are extremely grateful for a warm welcome and all the compliments on Polish design! Thanks to all the visitors for coming to the exhibition!

For now, we say Good Bye São Paulo! Brazil! We will be back soon. This year, as a result of collaboration with Culture.pl, The Spirit of Poland invites you for the second exhibition at the National Museum in Brasilia, in November.

Big thanks to all our partners, contributors and exhibitors, for making it happen!
